| Streets in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, after the typhoon… Surprisingly, mushrooms sprouted along the roadside not long after, but unbelievably, they turned out to be poisonous mushrooms.
Poisonous mushrooms, like all fungi, thrive in environments that offer:
- Moisture: Damp or humid conditions are essential for growth.
- Organic Matter: They feed on decaying organic material like leaves, wood, or soil.
- Shade: Direct sunlight can dry them out.
- Temperature: Moderate temperatures (often cool and humid) are ideal, but the exact range depends on the specific species.
Therefore, the best environments for poisonous mushrooms often include: - Forests: Decaying leaf litter, damp soil, and shade are abundant.
- Wooded Areas: Rotting logs and tree stumps provide food sources.
- Lawns: Overwatered lawns with a lot of thatch can sometimes support them.
- Gardens: If heavily mulched and consistently moist.
- Wetlands: Damp, shaded, and rich in decaying organic matter.
