As part of the Biden administration's American Investment Initiative, the Department of Energy announced today an investment of approximately $62 million in 20 projects across 15 states to accelerate the research, development, demonstration, and deployment of next-generation clean hydrogen technologies.

• This project is expected to develop and demonstrate hydrogen-powered container handling equipment for use at ports, while advancing key elements of hydrogen fuel infrastructure and improving essential processes for the efficient and equitable matching of hydrogen technology.

This announcement is expected to address the climate crisis while supporting the Biden administration's vision for affordable clean hydrogen energy.

• This vision is part of the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy. It is specified in the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap.
• This investment will support various end uses of clean hydrogen and will be an important part of the extensive research and development and demonstration activities portfolio of the DOE hydrogen program.

Clean hydrogen is a flexible energy carrier and an essential input in important chemical processes such as fertilizer production and steel manufacturing.

The DOE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) manages selected projects across five thematic areas.

• Hydrogen fuel components for medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) vehicles (4 projects, $8.5 million)
• Future standardized hydrogen charging stations (4 projects, 40 million dollars)
• Port equipment utilizing hydrogen fuel cells (1 project, 2.5 million dollars)
• Approval and safety of hydrogen deployment (7 projects, 7 million dollars)
• Participation in a fair hydrogen technology community (4 projects, 4 million dollars)
