| Community service can be a crucial factor in moving your career forward. For example, most schools require completion of a set number of hours for students to graduate. Outside of graduation requirements, the application process values community service as well. In fact, Forbes wrote about a survey of college admissions personnel, where 58% agreed. “A student’s community service experience has a positive impact on his or her acceptance to our higher education institution.” Generally, community service can show the desirable traits candidates posses. Volunteer activities showcase attributes such as empathy, leadership, teamwork, management skills, and a proactive attitude. Self-starters are favorable as candidates for being viewed as people who will commit and become active members to a network. This idea is backed-up by another finding in the survey, which gave admissions leaders the following to contemplate: “Assuming all factors are equal (such as GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and rigor of curriculum), then community service details are an important decision-making factor.” An outstanding 53% of admissions leaders agreed with community service being a tie-breaker between similar candidates. Community Service (aka Volunteering) offers a multitude of experiences that can be incredibly enriching and fulfilling. Here are some ways volunteering can provide valuable experiences: - Skill Development: Volunteering often involves tasks that allow you to learn new skills or hone existing ones. Whether it's leadership, communication, problem-solving, or technical skills, volunteering can be a practical way to develop yourself.
- Networking Opportunities: Volunteering brings you into contact with people from diverse backgrounds, including professionals in your field of interest. These connections can lead to valuable networking opportunities, potential mentors, or even job offers in the future.
- Personal Growth: Volunteering challenges you to step outside your comfort zone, fostering personal growth and self-awareness. It can boost your confidence, resilience, and empathy as you engage with different communities and tackle various challenges.
- Sense of Purpose: Contributing your time and effort to a cause you believe in can provide a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment. Knowing that you're making a positive impact on the lives of others or the environment can be deeply rewarding.
- Cultural Understanding: Volunteering often involves working with diverse groups of people, exposing you to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. This can broaden your worldview and enhance your cultural competence.
- Leadership Opportunities: Many volunteering roles offer leadership positions or responsibilities, allowing you to develop and demonstrate your leadership skills in a real-world setting.
- Resume Building: Volunteering demonstrates your commitment, initiative, and willingness to contribute beyond your immediate interests. It can enhance your resume and make you more attractive to potential employers or educational institutions.
- Emotional Rewards: Volunteering can evoke feelings of compassion, gratitude, and joy as you witness the positive impact of your efforts firsthand. These emotional rewards can boost your overall well-being and sense of fulfillment.
Overall, volunteering offers a unique and valuable experience that goes beyond merely donating time. It can shape your character, broaden your horizons, and leave a lasting impact on both you and the communities you serve.
