Volunteer activity at US Nursing Home in Anaheim, California

This was my first shot at volunteering in the US, and let me tell you, it was a hoot! Back in South Korea, I've done my fair share of volunteering, but this time, I wanted to lend a hand to the old-timers in the nursing home here. You know, I reckon it's mighty important to give our elders the respect they deserve. "Respect for the aged is perhaps the most underrated virtue in society." - Aristotle They've clocked in more years than we have, so they've probably got stories that could fill up a library! So there I was, expecting a kinda shabby scene at the nursing home, but surprise, surprise—it was clean as a whistle! Like, I could've eaten off the floor (not that I would, mind you). I mean, that was better than a lot of places I've seen. "Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see." - Mark Twain And hey, if I can bring a bit of cheer to those old souls, why not? Plus, who knows, I might snag a tale or two for the storybooks! So, I sauntered in there with a big smile on my face and a twinkle in my eye, ready to make some folks' day. "A smile is the universal welcome." - Max Eastman Turns out, those old-timers were a lively bunch! We played cards, chatted about this and that, and I even got a few dance moves out of them. Who knew bingo could be so intense? But seriously, it warmed my heart to see them light up with laughter and smiles. "Laughter is timeless. Imagination has no age. And dreams are forever." - Walt Disney Some of them had stories that could rival any blockbuster movie. One guy, let's call him Jack, told me about his days as a pilot during the war. Man, I could've listened to him talk for hours. And another lady, Sarah, showed me pictures of her grandkids. You could see the love shining in her eyes. “Old age is like a fine wine; it gets better with age.” By the time I left, I felt like I'd gained a whole new family. Those old-timers might be a bit slow on their feet, but they've got hearts of gold. And you know what? Volunteering at the nursing home wasn't just about helping them—it was about learning from them, too. "The greatest gift you can give is your time. The greatest reward is the smile you receive in return." So, here's to the old-timers at the nursing home—may your days be filled with laughter, love, and lots of bingo wins. And to anyone out there thinking about volunteering, I say go for it. You never know what kind of magic you'll find in the most unexpected places. "Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart." - Elizabeth Andrew Tags: Aristotle Elizabeth Andrew HALO Club Mark Twain Max Eastman Nursing Home Respecting Seniors Volunteer Activity Walt Disney
